You’ve got great insights to share—don’t let bad audio or poor video quality take away from your message. Whether you’re joining The Growth Signal or hopping on any other podcast, a little prep goes a long way in making sure you sound and look your best.
Audio: Make Sure You Sound Crisp and Clear
Great audio is more important than great video. Listeners will forgive a slightly messy background, but if they can’t hear you clearly, they’ll tune out.
Here’s how to get it right:
Use an External Mic (If You Have One)
The best option is an external microphone placed close to your mouth. USB mics like the Shure MV7, Blue Yeti, or Rode NT-USB make a huge difference. If you don’t have one, no worries—just follow the next best steps.
Wear Headphones
Wearing wired headphones helps reduce echo and sound bleed. If they have a built-in mic (like Apple EarPods), even better. If wireless is your only option, AirPods or high-quality Bluetooth earbuds work too, but wired options are more reliable.
Keep Your Mic Close
If you’re using a headset or an external mic, keep it 6-12 inches from your mouth. The closer the mic, the better the sound. If your mic is too far away (like on your desk), it’ll pick up more background noise and sound hollow.
Avoid Echo and Background Noise
Find a quiet space with minimal background noise. Hard surfaces like glass tables or empty rooms cause echoes—soft surfaces (like carpets, curtains, or a couch) help absorb sound.
Mute Notifications
Turn off Slack, email alerts, and any other notifications that might ding or buzz in the background. Nothing kills a great clip like a surprise notification sound.
Video: Make Sure You Look Professional (Without Fancy Gear)
Even though The Growth Signal is an audio podcast, we record video and use clips to promote episodes. A few simple tweaks can make a big difference in how you come across on camera.
Find Good Lighting
- The best setup? A lamp or ring light positioned in front of you.
- Avoid sitting with a window behind you—you’ll be in shadow.
- Natural light is great, but if it’s too bright or uneven, adjust your blinds or use a soft lamp.
Check Your Background
- A clean, non-distracting background keeps the focus on you.
- If you’re in a cluttered space, try a simple virtual background or a blurred effect.
- If you have company branding (like a small sign or a bookshelf with relevant items), that’s a nice touch.
Position Your Camera at Eye Level
- Avoid the dreaded “laptop up-the-nose” shot—prop up your laptop or webcam so it’s at eye level.
- Sit an arm’s length from your camera for the best framing.
Stay Engaged on Video
Since we use video clips to promote episodes, your body language matters. Stay engaged—even when you’re not talking. Nodding along, reacting naturally, and avoiding distracted multitasking helps make the conversation feel dynamic.
